Artist talk Reflection : CAROL EMMONS

    On the 25th of February, Carol Emmons, an installation artist from Wisconsin was invited give a talk at my school, Lawrence University. Her presentation was centered around the origins of art making, in which she attempted to answer the question: where does art come from? how is art created? 

    According to Emmons, art can come from 8 different aspects: genetics, the environment, divine intervention, education, research, site, theme and magic. To illustrate this idea, she took us through her own artistic journey and how she developed her artistic side.  

For Carol Emmons, the environment she grew up and lived in, as well as her education, research, site and theme influenced how she saw and created pieces/installations. 

    It made me think about my own journey as an artist. Where does art come from for me? 

Certainly not from genetics, as neither of my parents being conventionally artistic. I do think that I share the same aspects as Emmons, but I would like to add divine intervention my own magic to the mix.

    Le 25 février, Carol Emmons, une artiste d'installation du Wisconsin, a été invitée à donner une  presentation dans mon école, Lawrence Université. Celle-ci était centrée sur les origines de la création artistique, dans laquelle elle a tenté de répondre à la question : d'où vient l'art ? comment l'art est-il créé ? 

    Selon Emmons, l'art peut provenir de 8 aspects différents : la génétique, l'environnement, l'intervention divine, l'éducation, la recherche, le site, le thème et la magie. Pour illustrer cette idée, elle nous a fait découvrir son propre parcours artistique et en particulier la manière dont elle l'a développé. 

Pour Carol Emmons,  c'est l'environnement dans lequel elle a grandi et vécu, ainsi que son éducation, ses recherches, le site et le thème qui ont influencé sa façon de voir et de créer des pièces/installations. 

    Cela m'a fait réfléchir à mon propre parcours en tant qu'artiste. D'où vient l'art pour moi ? 

Certainement pas de la génétique, car aucun de mes parents n'est conventionnellement artistique. Je pense plutôt que je partage les mêmes aspects que Emmons, mais j'aimerais aussi ajouter les autres aspects tel que l'intervention divine et ma propre magie.
