ANALYSIS
There is no linguistic message in the photos as the goal is more to challenge our understanding of what a building is. The picture seem to have a mystical quasi symbolique meaning/ side which give the impression that the building are not of normal buildings. This feeling is accentuated by the use of black and white colors on the picture.
In this collection, Helene Binet photographs Zaha Hadid's building but leaves the interpretation to the viewer. Indeed, in some picture it is hard to figure out what is shown.
The pictures looks like a hyper realistic paintings or computer generated image in particular thanks to the presence of symmetry and colors.

LINK TO BATHE QUOTE
"The more technology develops the diffusion of information (and notably of images), the more it provides themeans of masking the constructed meaning under the appearance of the given meaning."

Those picture and quote made me realize that "What you think it is, might not be or could be something else"

USE OF INSPIRATION
My goal is to use a similar method to that used by Helene Binet. I want to photograph the hidden and/or underlying side of buildings (urban architecture).

  1. I feel that the constructed meaning is on equals with the given meaning in some of the images, particularly the right one. There is a high degree of abstraction to all of them, with the recognizability of the object varying from pic to pic. To me, that creates an interesting dialogue between the intended design and perceived design of the architecture, its shapes and textures manipulated through the lens to take away the agency of the architect. I find it fascinating how it's quite difficult to reframe a lot of modern architecture projects for how clean, recognizable, and timeless they look. Here, I feel like that difficulty is being surpassed.

  2. This series of photos evokes a sense of stillness and solitude, showcasing a world devoid of human presence while still highlighting human life. Among the collection, the image in the top left corner is particularly striking. The use of high contrast and black and white photography throughout adds to the overall mood of the series. The photos rely on the interplay of 3D perspective and texture to convey the architecture, requiring the viewer to scrutinize each detail in order to understand the building's geometry. The first photo, in particular, invites prolonged observation as the viewer gradually notices the thick eaves and the absence of light, causing the building to blend into the darkness. Overall, this series of photos offers a contemplative and thought-provoking look at human existence, emphasizing the beauty of stillness and simplicity in a world often characterized by chaos and noise.
