RESEARCH PROJECT : LADY PINK

Sandra Fabara better known by her graffiti artist name Lady Pink, was born in 1964 in Ambato, Ecuador, but was raised in Queens, New York City. She began creating graffiti art in the early 1980s, when she was just 15 years old, inspired by the vibrant street art culture of the city. In fact, during the 70s and 80s, Graffiti art was seen as a form of self-expression and rebellion in urban environments particularly in New York City but few female artist were present, It has since evolved into a recognized art form, with many artists, including Lady Pink, gaining international recognition for their work.
I Was a Feminist and I Didn't Know It': How Lady Pink Made a Space for  Herself in the Boys Club of New York's Graffiti Scene

Lady Pink quickly made a name for herself in the graffiti art scene, becoming one of the most prominent female artists in a male-dominated field. Her style blends realism and stylization with a feminist perspective and often features bright colors, bold lines, and a blend of realistic and stylized imagery that reflects her experience as a Latina growing up in New York City. Lady Pink has also contributed to the development of the graffiti art genre by introducing new themes and styles, such as her use of cartoon characters and social commentary in her works .

Fabara has been a vocal advocate for young artists and girls who are interested in graffiti art. She founded the first all-female graffiti crew, TC5 (the cool five) in 1980 and has since worked to promote diversity and representation in the arts . Lady Pink has also been involved in several organizations that support young artists, such as Groundswell and the Young Women's Leadership School.

  1. I love how localized her art is; it's not only that graffitti is attached to a specific site, but that she also keeps her art confined to mostly NY as well!
