ERIC J. GARCIA:

Eric J. Garcia is an artist scheduled to present on April 22, 2024. He is a dynamic voice in contemporary art, dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Chicano culture. His work intricately explores the rich and often troubled history between the United States and Mexico, challenging the widespread whitewashing of history. Garcia's powerful visual narratives highlight the cultural erasure and injustices faced by Chicano communities, making him an influential figure in the fight for historical accuracy and cultural representation.

Yo soy commander in chief

Keep Santa Fe multicultural

Garcia's passion for the complexities of the border resonates deeply with my idea for a personal project on video about Puerto Rico's cultural and political history. Like the Chicano experience, Puerto Rico's history is marked by colonization, cultural suppression and the imposition of foreign narratives. The island's history, marked by the impacts of Spanish colonization and subsequent American control, reflects the struggles of Chicano communities against “gringo” domination and whitewashed histories.

Through his work, Mr. Garcia confronts conflicting versions of history, urging the public to recognize and honor the true experiences and contributions of marginalized groups. This fits perfectly with my goal of highlighting Puerto Rico's rich heritage and ongoing struggles against cultural erasure and political disenfranchisement. By presenting the parallel histories of Chicanos and Puerto Ricans, my project aims to contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of these cultures.

Eric J. Garcia's talk and commitment to discovering and celebrating Chicano culture inspired me to delve deeper into the history of Puerto Rico. By challenging dominant historical narratives, these projects both claim and celebrate diverse heritages, ensuring that the stories of our communities are told authentically and with the respect they deserve.
